CAREERS of the FUTURE
Campbell River Community Centre Thursday, June 11, 2009

The Mid-Island Science, Technology & Innovation Council (MISTIC) and North Island Employment (NIEFS) held the North Island "CAREERS of the FUTURE" event, showcasing to workers, students and the community what types of careers/jobs are going to be in demand in your field and what qualifications your business will need from future employees.

The focus of this event highlighted:

  • Businesses of the North Island that expect to grow in the next couple of years;

  • The types of jobs / careers that will be in demand 2010 and beyond;

  • What qualifications are needed to do the work of the future; and

  • Where to obtain training to prepare for the future.

Aboriginal Science Fair Celebration
May 21, 2009
Robron Centre, Campbell River, BC

MISTIC hosted the Aboriginal Science Fair Celebration, a pilot project in partnership with School District 72 Campbell River and the Science Fair Foundation of BC on May 21, 2009. This science fair celebration showcased 82 science projects from 166 students from three elementary schools in Campbell River. The projects highlighted Aboriginal science, technology and traditional ways of of knowing.

Innovation Workshop
The workshop (May 4th, 2009 at Vancouver Island University) focused on government programs and services available to assist businesses and academics conducting innovative research.  In an Eight different federal government agencies discussed how their programs can offset the high cost of your R&D, provide technical and other support, and bring talented students and post docs into business and academic labs.

First Nations Community Science Celebration 

On April 25, 2009 MISTIC, in partnership with Chemainus First Nations and Science World, held a community science celebration with 25 exhibitors at the Chemainus First Nation Community Centre.  Activities included bannok making, salmon barbeque, storytelling, science shows by Science World and experiments done by Vancouver Island University Chemistry Club students.  The RCMP Forensics Department was on hand to demonstrate how to capture your fingerprints.  Thank you to Tim Horton's in Ladysmith for providing the coffee and muffins for exhibitors at the event! 


MISTIC is pleased to announce we raised over $1000 for the Heart & Stroke Foundation on June 4th by riding the Big Bike around Port Place!

School District 69 (Qualicum) Science Fair
On March 4, 5, and 6, 2009, School District 69 hosted their twelfth bi-annual district-wide science fair at Wembley Mall in Parksville during Education Week. Student projects were on display for public and school viewing and judging.


Science and Technology Lecture Series
MISTIC was proud to be one of the sponsors for the Vancouver Island University Science and Technology Lecture Series. It took place from January 14, 2009 to April 1, 2009.


The First 99 Milestones
In partnership with the NRC, MISTIC held "The First 99 Milestones", a two-day seminar was held on January 20 and 21, 2009 in Courtenay, BC. The event was for entrepreneurs in the early stages of a start-up, or in transition, or who wanted to find out more about how to design, build and finance a winning early-stage business. The facilitator was Roger Killen the well-known facilitator of the Investor Ready 101 workshops.


Enterprising Ideas Forum
The Enterprising Ideas Forum took place on March 17, 2008 and was MISTIC's first video conference event. The forum was broadcast from North Island College, Comox Valley campus to Campbell River, Port Alberni and Port Hardy campuses. The morning presentations were video broadcast to the other campuses and then after the networking lunch each community had presentations from their local Economic Development Office and Community Futures.

A total of 16 guest speakers and 62 participants were in attendance. The Comox Valley and Port Alberni classrooms were filled to capacity with Campbell River only having two vacant seats. Overall for our first video conference session things went well. We have received positive responses from attendees as well as constructive feedback. Campbell River Community Science Celebration
MISTIC was pleased to host the 2009 Popsicle Stick Bridge Building Contest at the Campbell River Community Science Celebration on February 21, 2009.

VEX Robotics Competition
MISTIC, along with School district 71 was pleased to host the first ever Vancouver Island VEX Robotics Competition at Lake Trail Secondary School in Courtenay, BC. The event, which was held on January 31, 2009 was a huge success and over 168 kids in grades 8 to 12 competed.

Quantum Leaps Conference
MISTIC in partnership with the Society for Canadian Women in Science and Technology and Vancouver Island University, hosted a very successful Quantum Leaps Conference on Wednesday, October 22, 2008 at Vancouver Island University, Malaspina Campus, during National Science and Technology Week.

A total of 72 individuals that included students, parents, and teachers attended the event. Four Student Ambassadors from Vancouver Island University, 12 role models, and 6 volunteers also participated. MISTIC is pleased to announce that the keynote speaker for the event was Dr. Brenda Matthews, an astronomer with the National Research Council of Canada, located at the Herzberg Institute of Astrophysics in Victoria, BC.
