Five schools need $60M in upgrades

Older facilities require improvements for seismic safety, labs and gymnasiums

The Daily News
October 21, 2009

At least $60 million in renovations and upgrades are needed at five secondary schools in the Nanaimo-Ladysmith school district.

But district officials maintain that the schools are safe and say teachers and other staff members offer the best education possible to students, despite the limitations of aging buildings and equipment.

A plan to close two of the district's oldest high schools (Nanaimo District and Woodlands Secondary) and open a new state-of-the-art secondary school at the Woodlands site was rejected by the district's board of trustees in January when they decided against closing more schools.

A new facilities plan is now being prepared and a draft plan is expected to be completed by January. Whether the Ministry of Education, which approved the rejected $87-million facilities plan, will approve and agree to fund a new plan that will likely call for no further school closures at a time of declining enrolment has yet to be seen.

"Our teachers do great work with the students in the district and it's really the relationship between them that defines the quality of education in Nanaimo-Ladysmith," said superintendent Mike Munro. "But the state of our facilities can be a limiting factor if they are older and not upgraded. Clearly, brand-new facilities with up-to-date equipment offer the best opportunities for our students to learn."
