UVic students receive fellowships for climate change

September 14, 2009
Saanich News

Five PhD students and one masters student at the University of Victoria will benefit from climate change research scholarships, announced this week by the Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions (PICS).

The students are among 22 from provincial institutions to receive one of the new or extended scholarships that are collectively worth more than $250,000.

The fellowships represent a major investment in ensuring provincial decision-makers are provided with up-to-date and relevant information to help guide policy decision, said PICS director Dr. Tom Pedersen in a press release.

Among the research topics tackled by the PICS scholarship recipients are the impact of climate change on the invasion of biological species, and reducing B.C.'s aviation carbon footprint despite a global upswing in aircraft emissions.

The scholarships are worth up to $12,000 a year for masters’ students and $18,000 for PhD students.
